SENSITIVITY - BENEFITS OF TEACHING WITH TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) FOR YOUNG LEARNERS
I am showcasing the TPR teaching methodology with our young students in this blog. It is a fun way of teaching that is easier and keeps my student memorable.
Most students learn in many different ways, which is why there are various teaching techniques available. One of these various techniques is the Total Physical Response (TPR) method, which involves students acting out the meaning of a specific word or phrase you’re teaching them. You’re probably familiar with the term, but you might not be aware of the benefits of TPR teaching. As you’ll learn below, this method can be particularly useful for teaching young students new languages.
I tried it out with my Dolphin and chicken levels for introducing and learning new vocabulary. It works a lot and had wonderful results for building vocabulary. It helps my student to understand the target language easily. I am listing out the actual benefits of the TPR which will really help your students.
Benefits of the TPR
1. Promotes Listening - TPR in education involves the students listening to the teacher. Obviously, Kindergarten class in general should involve listening, but the TPR teaching method is a great way to demand immediate attention. I often use the action to grab their attention which involves students in the lesson instead of getting distracted.
2. Boost Engagement - As a teacher, we always keep on asking for our student's attention during the lesson but the hard thing is retaining that until the whole period is a challenging task. I often use this TPR methodology to make the students listen attentively to me so they can carry out motions corresponding with the key vocabulary words and phrases. Asking the students to make action will keep them involved in the lesson without distraction. I also impose them to have the repetitious movements of the TPR methods which can be a similar way of memorizing when learning but very hard to forget.
3. Strengthens comprehension - My TPR method helps students to have a better understanding of the concepts with movements which will be acting as a great foundation before you are getting more into the technical side of new vocabulary (pronunciation and spelling).
4. Work with all levels of students - I have a class with mixed ability levels students. The TPR suits to work well with the class having all different levels of students in the ability to keep them engaged and to have a better learning environment.
5. Struggling students - TPR helps the struggling students and the students who are really hard to focus during my lesson. It makes my learners achieve fluency faster in learning the language.
6. Positive thinking - creates positive thinking with my learners and makes them come out from shyness and learn the language with perfection and good understanding.
